Congaree National Park upgrading trail markings

Posted: Updated:

HOPKINS, S.C. (AP) - Congaree National Park southeast of Columbia is working to improve the markings on more than 20 miles of trails.

The park formally announced the project Thursday. Superintendent Tracey Stakely says plans to make the trail markings clearer were developed long before a man and his two children got lost in the park earlier this year.

The current trails are designated by colored markers. Some of the markers have disappeared over the years when large parts of the park flooded. Some of the marks were on trees knocked down by high winds or ice damage.

The new markings will have numbers on brown tabs with reflective stickers that should be easier to see. The numbering system will make it easier to report the location of hikers who have problems.
