Merchants: Budget cut will end Myrtle Beach events

Posted: Updated:

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) - The Oceanfront Merchants Association in Myrtle Beach says a budget cut will mean the end of several popular festivals at the beach.

The Sun News of Myrtle Beach reports ( that the city's Downtown Redevelopment Association voted Thursday cut $90,000 from the $260,000 it gives to the association.

Association president Chris Walker says the cut will end Oktoberfest, Boardwalk Fright Nights and the St. Patrick's Day festivals downtown.

Tom Leath with the Downtown Redevelopment Association says the group needs the money to help redevelop Ocean Boulevard south of the old Pavilion location.

Myrtle Beach is the center of South Carolina's $18 billion tourism industry.
