Juneteenth celebration held in North Charleston

Posted: Updated:

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- The Gullah Geechee heritage was front and center Saturday at a special event in North Charleston.

The Gullah Geechee Juneteenth celebration kicked off at the Jenkins orphanage. Charleston Mayor Joe Riley was there to give a proclamation to Ambassador Augustine Bockaire from Africa.

The event featured music, African dance, food and authentic storytelling.

"We are celebrating really the slaves were free in the state of Texas after the emancipation, and we get together. I wish all states would get together, and it means so much having us here because 40 percent of the slaves that came into the state came into the state of South Carolina, and this is something we want to bring attention to because so many ancestors are here," said Katie Catalon.

The celebration continues through the rest of the month.
