Coast Guard searching waters off coast after unmanned boat spotted

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) – U.S. Coast Guard officials are hoping someone can tell them about an unmanned boat adrift in open waters 30 miles south of Charleston.

The boat was spotted Sunday evening, officials said, by a good Samaritan who alerted Coast Guard Sector Charleston.

According to officials, the 14-foot yellow McKee Craft center-console boat was drifting with the engine in the up position. No one was on board.

Coast Guard officials said they did not know if the boat broke free of its mooring and drifted or someone took the boat out and fell overboard.

The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Diamondback and a helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Facility Charleston was dispatched to search the area in case someone is in distress.

Anyone with any information about the boat is urged to contact the Sector Charleston command center by calling 843-740-7050.
