Coll. of Charleston, Clemson bill stalls

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A bill to expand the College of Charleston into a research university and allow Clemson University to speed construction projects has stalled in the General Assembly.

House and Senate members are trying to work out a compromise. They met for about 30 minutes Tuesday before the Legislature came into session. But some lawmakers are worried about losing oversight over Clemson's projects and whether the College of Charleston needs to be a research university.

Sen. Harvey Peeler asked if the sky would fall if the bill was delayed until next year. Several lawmakers asked the Gaffney Republican to at least give the bill a chance. He agreed to meet again Tuesday afternoon.

House members say they may only meet Tuesday, pressuring conference committees to pass bills.
