GOP says no repeat of adjutant general primary

Posted: Updated:

FLORENCE, S.C. (AP) - The state Republican Party has rejected a request to stage another primary for adjutant general.

The Morning News of Florence reports ( ) that James Breazeale filed a protest Monday. He lost last week to incumbent Maj. Gen. Bob Livingston, Jr., by almost 143,000 votes.

Breazeale asked for a new primary because the adjutant general's race was accidently omitted from absentee ballots issued in Florence County for several days last month. The 41 people who cast ballots during that period were mailed supplemental ballots with the race included.

Breazeale says omitting his name could have affected his chances.

But state GOP Chairman Matt Moore dismissed the protest. Moore says Livingston gained no competitive advantage and Breazeale would not have come close to making up the 143,000-vote deficit.
