COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The South Carolina Senate is meeting to decide how many of Gov. Nikki Haley's budget vetoes will be tossed aside.

The Senate will take up 61 vetoes Wednesday that the House chose to override. A two-thirds majority vote is also needed in the Senate to restore the budget items.

The House sustained just 15 of Haley's 76 vetoes, tallying $1.4 million.

Items the Senate will take up include a $2 million veto that cuts caregivers for seniors. Haley says the Office on Aging is growing too fast.

Lt. Gov. Glenn McConnell says programs that help seniors live independently in their homes save taxpayers money, because Medicaid-paid nursing beds are 40 times more expensive.

Senators will also decide whether to keep a $12,000 annual increase in legislators' stipend for in-district expenses.
