Horse, person injured in carriage accident in downtown Charleston

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- One person and a horse were injured Thursday afternoon in downtown Charleston when a horse-drawn carriage collided with a building.

Police said the incident happened on Tradd Street around 3:45 p.m. when "something caused the horse to take off running." The horse ran into a building.

Police say the horse had cuts to its face and legs. It is owned by the Charleston Carriage Works company. Animal Control officials are at the scene assessing the horse's injuries.

EMS officials say the person does not have life-threatening injuries. There were reportedly five people, including a driver, on the carriage at the time of the accident.

Police said the injured person has a bump on the leg. The house has some minor damage.

Officials have not said how the incident happened.

Charleston Carriage Works also owned the horse that was spooked and crashed into a building on Market Street in April. In that incident, officials said the horse was drinking water from a large trash can before going out on tour. The trash can is used by Charleston Carriage Works to hold water and is kept at the loading area where passengers get on and off the carriages.
