Victims of violence rally for peace

Posted: Updated:

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) -- The families of Lowcountry murder victims say enough is enough after a string of violent acts left more people dead in the last month.

Francis Marion University sophomore Ariel Morgan was killed at a block party less than two weeks ago. Three young men from Ladson and Summerville were all gunned down at Atlantic Bike Week over the Memorial Day weekend.

They are just two of the multiple examples of young lives lost in recent shootings.

Community leaders and families gathered in Summerville Thursday evening to call for an end to the violence. The seven families all had one mission.

"We are rallying around the families as well as the communities to tell people enough is enough we want to stop the funerals," said Louis Smith, the director of the Community Resource Center in Summerville.

The center gathered the seven families who have lost loved ones to violent crimes in the hopes of making a cultural shift.

"For one, stopping the violence, and two, helping young men and women try to take a different path in life instead of what they see on TV and hear in music," said Kim Danzler, a family member of a Bike Week shooting victim.

They are pleading for the community's support and hoping their neighbors hear the pleas.

"We are tired we are going to support the police and we are going to stop the terrorism that really exists in our communities and for them to make awareness of this is very very important," Smith said.

The group has organized a rally and march for Saturday, June 21. The event starts at 11 a.m. at Wassamassaw Park in Summerville. Everyone is invited to attend.
