Recall: Vita salmon slices sold at SC Publix stores

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Vita Food Products is voluntarily recalling 1,878 pounds of sliced salmon for possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

According to a release from the company, the Vita Classic Premium Sliced Smoked Atlantic Salmon was sold at Hannaford grocery stores in New York, Massachusetts, Vermont, and New Hampshire; H-E-B grocery stores in Texas; and Publix grocery stores in Alabama, Florida, Georgia and South Carolina beginning on April 7, 2014.

The Listeria monocytogenes organism can cause infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

Healthy people might suffer short-term symptoms like high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

So far, no confirmed illnesses or complaints have been reported.

The recall stems from test results that came from one package of salmon that tested positive for the organism.

The packages are black, vacuum sealed plastiwith thehe Vita logo centered at the bottom. Recalled packages can be identified by a SELL BY AUG 17 2014 date and lot number 00764B, which can be found on the right side on the front of the package. The 4oz size of this product is the only size subject to this recall.

Anyone who purchased this product with the sell-by date and lot number above should dispose of the product and request a refund by mailing the product label or a copy of the receipt to Vita Food Products, Inc., Attn: Customer Service, 2222 West Lake Street. Chicago, Illinois 60612.
