CARTA's executive director resigns after arrest

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Days after being arrested in downtown Charleston on charges of being disorderly, CARTA's executive director has tendered her resignation.

Officials at the transportation agency said Friday afternoon Christine Wilkinson had stepped down from her role.

CARTA issued a statement on her decision Friday, saying she had been a loyal member of CARTA for more than 20 years.

"The board thanks Ms. Wilkinson, a loyal public servant for more than two decades, for her service and the numerous advances she made for public transportation in the region during her leadership tenure. Her achievements include overseeing record ridership numbers, the addition of hybrid buses to the CARTA fleet, the rollout of new services and technologies, and preparations for the forthcoming world-class intermodal transportation facility in North Charleston," it reads.

The board of directors named transportation planner Jeff Burns as the interim director earlier this week. He will continue that role as the board prepared to find Wilkinson's replacement.

“I’m excited to be able to serve the public in whatever capacity is required. CARTA provides vital services to our community and my top priority is to ensure that those continue to be delivered with quality and efficiency.," Burns said.
