CofC head baseball coach a top candidate at Arizona State

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- College of Charleston head coach Monte Lee interviewed this week for the head coaching job at Arizona State, ABC Sports 4 has confirmed.

The program at Arizona State is traditionally considered one of the top college baseball programs in the country.

Kendall Rogers from A Perfect Game is reporting that Lee has emerged as a leading candidate for the Arizona State job. He says ASU will make a decision by the middle of next week.

Rogers is also reporting there was a diverse set of names on the program's list of interviewees.

ASU is looking to replace Tim Esmay, who resigned after five seasons at the helm of the Sun Devils with an overall record of 201-94-1.

In Esmay’s tenure, ASU made the College World Series in 2010 with a 52-10 record and a regular season Pac-10 title. In 2011, the Sun Devils reached the NCAA Super Regionals. In 2012, Arizona State was ineligible for the NCAA tournament due to a postseason ban. In 2013 and 2014, ASU reached the NCAA tournament but in both seasons were ousted in the regional round.

In Charleston, Lee compiled a 231-130 as head coach of the Cougars, including a 44 win campaign in his final year at the helm. The 2014 season tied the most wins in a single season under Lee and marked just the second NCAA Super Regional appearance in program history.

In Lee’s six seasons as head coach at CofC, the Cougars averaged more than 38 wins per season and made three NCAA tournament appearances. In that span, 21 players were drafted or signed free agent deals to play professional baseball.
