Beaufort County jail to make changes after probe

Posted: Updated:

BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) - Beaufort County says it will review its policy for booking inmates into the county's jail after a State Law Enforcement Division investigation.

The Beaufort Gazette reports ( ) that prosecutors reviewed SLED's report and chose not to file charges against the jail's public safety director, Phil Foot, for intervening in his stepdaughter's November arrest.

But county officials say they will also review the report and make policy changes.

The SLED report says Foot met the Beaufort County Police officer who arrested his stepdaughter for public drunkenness in a secure area just outside the jail and drove her away before she was booked.

The police officer didn't get in trouble because she told her supervisor she thought Foot was taking the woman in the jail himself.

Foot says it was a misunderstanding.
