SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) -- A 1.8-magnitude earthquake was recorded in the Summerville area Monday evening, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake was recorded around 6:13 p.m. EST about 2 kilometers from Summerville. It appears to be centered just off of West 5th North Street by Kapstone.

The epicenter was 6.3 miles underground.

For those who like to map these events, the coordinates are 33.033°N 80.192°W.

College of Charleston Associated Professor of Geology Dr. Erin Beutel has commented on the numerous quakes felt in the Lowcountry in the past. She said quakes of this magnitude are so small that they are hardly felt and cause no damage.

Last February a 4.1-magnitude quake hit the Summerville area followed by a 3.2-magnitude aftershock.
