Peagler wins in Berkeley; McMaster, Spearman, Thompson advance

Posted: Updated:

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) -- William Peagler is one step closer to being the new Berkeley County Supervisor.

He beat current supervisor Dan Davis in a Republican primary run-off Tuesday night. The state elections commission shows Peagler locked up 56 percent of the vote.

The run-off was forced after Davis did not lock up the required 50 percent of the vote.

In statewide races with roughly half of all counties reporting, Henry McMaster has a nearly 30-point lead on Mike Campbell in the Lieutenant Governor race. The Associated Press has declared McMaster the winner in the race.

McMaster released a statement on his victory Tuesday night, thanking his supporters.

"I’m honored to receive the support of so many South Carolinians who recognize our State’s greatest days do lie ahead. As our next Lt. Governor, I will stand tall with Governor Nikki Haley to ensure our great State and its citizens take pride in our true potential and make the Palmetto State the shining example of limited government, individual freedom and economic prosperity to be emulated by all. None of this would have been possible without the love and support from my wife Peggy and children Henry Jr. and Mary Rogers," he said.

In the state superintendent race, Tom Thompson beat Sheila Gallagher 58 percent to 42 percent in the Democratic runoff.

The state Democratic Party released a statement on Thompson's runoff victory.

“Tonight, Dr. Tom Thompson made history as the first African American elected as the Democratic candidate for Superintendent of Education. Tom has a plan to support and improve public education for our students and teachers here in South Carolina. Tom Thompson will be a champion for our students and schools, helping every educator and student to meet their potential and excel," chairman Jaime Harrison said.

With more than half of counties reporting, Molly Spearman leads Sally Atwater in the Republican primary runoff and has been declared the winner.
