DEKALB COUNTY, Alabama -- A teenager has been detained in connection with the fatal shooting of a Mount Vernon woman on Tuesday, DeKalb County Sheriff Jimmy Harris announced Wednesday.

The suspect, a 14-year-old whose name is being withheld, was taken into custody shortly after 1 p.m. after deputies found 38-year-old Kelena Annette Hicks suffering from a gunshot wound at her home on County Road 99. Hicks was airlifted to a hospital in Huntsville, where she died around 4:20 p.m., Harris said.

District Attorney Mike O'Dell has since ordered an autopsy to be performed on the victim at the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Huntsville. Meanwhile, the teen remains in a juvenile detention center in Anniston. The suspect will stay in jail pending a hearing on his status for trial.

“This is one of the most disturbing cases I have had to deal with in my career," Harris said in a release. "You just can’t imagine a 14-year-old doing something this brutal."

Harris said prior to her death. Hicks was dealing with the death of her father, who passed away just last month.

"I am very sorry for the family and their loss in this case," Harris said. "This young woman had just lost her father last month and this family is devastated. My thoughts and prayers go out to them."
