SC State: No budget yet but basketball remaining

Posted: Updated:

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) - Tuition will increase and the basketball program will remain at South Carolina State University, which has been battling financial problems.

The Orangeburg school's trustees were unable to finish a budget Wednesday for the budget year that begins next week.

But trustees did agree that in-state students will pay an additional $313, bringing their tuition and fees to just over $10,000. Out-of-state students will pay more than $900 more, bringing their costs to just under $20,000.

The school earlier received a $6 million loan from the state.

It will keep its basketball program. Eliminating the program had been suggested as one way to cut costs.

But the school's interim athletics director said that would have cost the university $730,000 in fees and have meant NCAA probation.
