New planning ordinance drafted for Hilton Head

Posted: Updated:

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - Officials at Hilton Head Island are working on new rules for planning.

Officials tell The Island Packet of Hilton Head (http://bit.ly/1nKDrZ0say) that the new rules make it easier for people to improve properties and expand businesses by allowing a wider range of land uses by reducing building restrictions.

The plan must still be approved by town council at next month's meeting.

Hilton Head Island architect Tom Crews says the changes are not designed to encourage rampant development but should remove restrictions that have caused aging office buildings to sit vacant and developers to invest off the island.

Crews says the ordinance will not turn the island into Myrtle Beach but will bring the type of development the resort island wants.
