Andujar’s grand slam highlights shutout rout

Posted: Updated:
CHARLESTON, S.C. (DOGS) – Miguel Andujar drove in six runs and also scored two runs while Ian Clarkin and Eric Ruth combined for a two-hit shutout during a 9-0 Charleston RiverDogs win over the Savannah Sand Gnats on Thursday evening in front of 5,366 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park in South Atlantic League action. The six runs batted in by Andujar is the best single-game total for a RiverDog this season.

Charleston is now 3-5 in the second half while Savannah is 4-4. The overall records are 36-42 for the RiverDogs and 48-26 for the Sand Gnats. The four-game series was split with two wins each.

Andujar blasted a grand slam to give Charleston a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Savannah’s John Gant had the bases loaded, two outs, and an 0-2 count when Andujar cleared the left field wall for a grand slam. It was his sixth home run for the RiverDogs.

The RiverDogs also scored a run in the fourth and fifth innings behind Clarkin’s strong start. Gosuke Katoh singled in Andujar for a five-run edge in the fourth. During the fifth, Andujar plated Reymond Nunez with a single to put Charleston ahead 6-0. Clarkin tied a career high with six innings pitched, allowing just one base hit while striking out seven.

Charleston’s three-run rally in the seventh buried Savannah behind a 9-0 advantage. Mike Ford led off with a single before Nunez was hit by a pitch from Tyler Vanderheiden. Eduardo de Oleo doubled to drive in Ford for the first run of the inning. Groundouts by Andujar and John Murphy also brought in runs, scoring Nunez and de Oleo to give Charleston a nine-run lead.

Ruth finished the contest with three shutout innings. He retired all but one batter that he faced, giving up a two-out single in the eighth to Patrick Biondi. Ruth also picked up one strikeout in his three innings of relief at the end of the contest.

Clarkin received the victory in his second career quality start as he evened his record at 3-3. Gant took the loss and is 7-4 this season. Ruth picked up the save, his first with the RiverDogs this year. Andujar went 2-for-3 and also drew a walk while directly accounting for seven of Charleston’s nine runs in the victory.

BALLPARK FUN: Stanley Feldman Night was celebrated, honoring a longtime friend of the RiverDogs who is a local attorney and a Charleston native. Also included was the playing of “Hello Dolly” during the seventh-inning stretch and a pregame presentation with South Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justice Jean Toal for Continuing Legal Education (CLE) Night. Other features were an appearance by Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Roddy White, a Luis Suarez “Bite Cam” for a World Cup Celebration, and a postgame concert from Cane Creek String Band.
