Lifeguards showcase life-saving skills in competition

ISLE OF PALMS, S.C. (WCIV) -- Rip currents, drowning, jelly fish stings, even shark bites, lifeguards are prepared for any number of scenarios that could happen on a day at the beach.

On Thursday, Lowcountry lifeguards will showcase their skills in the 17th annual South Carolina Lifeguard Competition.

Beach, pool, and water park lifeguards from across the state will compete in a variety of lifesaving events in order to be named the best lifeguard team in South Carolina.

The competition is open to all lifeguards who hold any type of current pool, beach, or water park lifeguard certification.

The one-day competition combines a variety of beach and pool events for contestants. It allows lifeguards the chance to train and compete as a team much like they would if they had to respond to a real aquatic or medical emergency.

The beach events of the competition will be held at Isle of Palms County Park and start around 10 a.m. The pool events will being at 1 p.m. and are held at the R.L. Jones Center in Mount Pleasant.

The event is hosted and sanctioned by the South Carolina Recreation and Park Association.
