Animal Society investigates dog shooting, offers $2500 reward

ADAMS RUN, S.C. (WCIV) -- The Charleston Animal Society is asking for the public's help in finding out how a dog got shot in the leg earlier this month.

According to CAS officials, Charleston County Sheriff's Deputies found the dogs and an Animal Control Deputy brought the animals to the Charleston Animal Society on June 15.

The three dogs were reportedly found on an abandoned property. One of those dogs, named Roscoe, was shot in the leg at close range. They said Roscoe was found tied to a 20-pound chain with his food and water out of reach.

"This is a terribly sad case. Not only was Roscoe shot, but while he was in agonizing pain, he was weighed down by this chain that was almost as heavy as he is," said Charleston Animal Society Animal Cruelty & Outreach Director Aldwin Roman.

Roscoe went through surgery Wednesday at the Charleston Animal Society. After a few x-rays The veterinarians noticed Roscoe had been shot and had 60 birdshot pellets in his leg and had to amputate the pup’s front right leg.

“We are pretty sure it was a close range shot; it was close enough to shatter the bone and caused his leg to retract,” said Roman.

The other two dogs were puppies and were found in an elevated wire crate with no food or water. They have been adopted to loving homes but Roscoe is recovering with a foster family.

CAS officials said he is "genuinely sweet and very affectionate" despite what he has gone through.

CAS is looking for anyone with information and is offering a $2,500 reward. The person(s) found responsible could also face criminal charges of animal cruelty and abandonment.

“Even if the shot wasn’t intentional, the failure to provide necessary medical care is intent to cause necessary pain and suffering, and that’s punishable by five years in jail and a $5,000 fine,” said Roman.
