ILA: Negotiations fail, port workers OK strike

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Port workers approved a strike after negotiations between the Longshoremen's Association and the state's Stevedore Association failed this week.

According to a release from the International Longshoremen's Association, the ILA workers rejected the "best nad final offer" made by the SCSA. During a strike vote, the measure was approved nearly unanimously.

Officials said in the release it was not uncommon for workers to make the strike vote and continue to talk out the dispute without a stoppage in work at the Port of Charleston.

"The ILA remains optimistic and is hoping for a similar outcome this time around. With that in mind, the ILA has invited the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Services to assist to break the stalemate," the release states.

The release points to "harmful rumors" in the media that come from what the ILA describes as "questionable sources."

"The parties involved in the dispute are governing themselves in a very responsible manner and so should everyone else," the release said in closing.
