SULLIVANS ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina National Guard members are being honored during Carolina Day ceremonies at Fort Moultrie on Sullivans Island.
Saturday is Carolina Day, the anniversary of the 1776 victory of patriots under Col. William Moultrie over a British fleet trying to capture Charleston. The victory came days before the Declaration of Independence was signed in Philadelphia.
On Saturday, 46 South Carolina flags - one for each county in the state - will be raised over Moultrie. Before an evening band concert, 11 flags will be given to families of Guard members killed in action in recent wars. The others will be presented to living Guard members.
Throughout the day at the fort, there will demonstrations of firing Revolutionary War-era cannon and muskets.
