Law allows sales taxes to fund school construction

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Voters in several South Carolina counties could decide this November to add a penny to their local sales tax to fund school construction.

A law signed by Gov. Nikki Haley expands to 15 the number of counties where the tax can be collected, if voters approve. An extra penny is already collected for schools in 10 of them.

The expansion push originated from Aiken County, where voters soundly defeated a 2010 request to pay for new schools through a property tax hike.

Co-sponsoring Sen. Shane Massey says the law provides a fairer funding method.

GOP Sen. Kevin Bryant of Anderson tried to kill the bill through a filibuster. When that failed, he asked Haley to veto it.

But Haley says she believes in letting people decide such matters for themselves.
