Funeral held for teen who died in downtown Charleston shooting

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- A teen killed in a shooting in downtown Charleston a little more than a week ago was buried Saturday.

The funeral service for 19-year-old Denzel Curnell was held at the Jerusalem Baptist Church in North Charleston.

Many people outside the church said they welcomed the last chance to remember Curnell. Burying a loved one is never easy to do.

"I'm going to miss his hospitality man. He had a big heart," said Louie Brown, a friend.

It's made even more difficult because Curnell was just beginning his life when it ended.

"I'm still in disbelief," said Bria Brown, another friend. "Today is his going away service so I'll just try and get through this and be strong."

A week ago Curnell died after being shot in the head. The State Law Enforcement Division is calling it a police-involved shooting because an officer was reportedly there at the time of the shooting.

However, investigators have not said the officer actually pulled the trigger. Charleston police officials have maintained the officer did not fire his weapon.

"Even myself just can't fathom the thought of him taking his life. He was very inspiring, very humble, and extremely intelligent. There was nothing you could ask of him that he wouldn't do for you," said Deacon Alandis Murray.

Curnell's death left family members with more questions than answers.

"I hope they find out the truth about everything, what went down. I know he didn't have no gun because he ain't deal with guns," said his aunt, Mary Curnell.

Now memories are all loved ones have to hold onto as they lined up outside the church preparing to say goodbye to the teen.

"Rest in peace and I love you. See again sometime," said Bria Brown.

SLED officials said Saturday they are still investigating the case.
