Fired Winthrop president pressed to hire husband

Posted: Updated:

ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) - Winthrop University's fired president began suggesting her husband could work for the university just weeks after she was picked for the job and before she signed her five-year contract.

The emails obtained by The Herald of Rock Hill ( ) also suggest Jamie Comstock Williamson after she started as president wanted a paid temporary job created for her husband.

In an August email to a senior staffer, Williamson suggested her husband's salary be $30,000 a year - low enough so it wouldn't attract critics.

Winthrop trustees fired Williamson on Friday less than a year after she started, saying she violated the school's nepotism policy by getting her husband a job.

Williamson's lawyer says she didn't directly supervise her husband and trustees knew about the job and helped Williamson's husband make connections.
