BBQ cook-off benefits Lowcountry firefighters

JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) -- Two local grill masters donned their aprons and whisked up their special sauces for the inaugural Battle of the Grill Masters BBQ Cook-off on Johns Island Sunday.

Outside the Relics Antique Center & Flea Market on Savannah Highway, the barbecue masters from Mo' Lovin' BBQ and Three Little Pigs went head-to-head Sunday afternoon in a beef brisket challenge.

"We have wanted for an entire year to do a benefit for the firefighters when we realized that the support team was no longer getting public funding," said Victoria Doyle, the owner of Relics.

Local firefighters had the tasty duty of judging the briskets and picking a winner.

Curious and hungry passers-by were able to buy pulled pork and chicken plates during the cook-off. Tickers were $8 for adults and $4 for children under age 12.

Organizers also put together entertainment for attendees, including live bands, a kid's corner, sales from antique vendors, and fire truck displays.

Proceeds from the cook-off went to the Lowcountry Firefighter Support Team, a group designed to help first responders deal with the stress and trauma of the job.

"Everybody's excited because of the fact that we're able to have this fundraiser here at Relics and all the money that's raised will support the firefighters support team, which is behavioral health oriented," said St. Andrews Fire Chief Mark Schrade.

The group was formed after the Sofa Super Store fire.

"Firefighters a lot of times have behavioral issues that they bring home from scenes that maybe need to be helped with, and it gives them an avenue that's available out there that they can go to and get a sense of direction," said Schrade.

Doyle said she was thrilled with the turnout for the inaugural event.
