Solo shot by Andujar not enough at Kannapolis

Posted: Updated:
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (DOGS) – A second-inning solo home run from Miguel Andujar led the Charleston RiverDogs to a quick lead before the Kannapolis Intimidators answered with two big rallies on their way to a 7-3 win on Sunday at CMC-NorthEast Stadium in South Atlantic League action.

Charleston is 3-8 in the second half and 36-45 this year. Kannapolis improves to 8-3 and 37-41, respectively. The Intimidators lead an eight-game season series by a 6-1 margin with six consecutive victories.

Andujar blasted the RiverDogs to a 1-0 lead in the second inning. He lifted a 2-2 pitch from Intimidators left-hander Jeff McKenzie for a solo homer to left field. Andujar’s home run, his first professional blast against a southpaw, was his seventh with the RiverDogs this year.

In the third inning, Kannapolis stormed ahead 4-1. With two runners on base and one out against Charleston’s Rookie Davis, Danny Hayes doubled to bring in Hunter Jones for the tying run. After a walk loaded the bases, Brett Austin’s sacrifice fly scored Cleuluis Rondon to take the lead. Another walk and a pitching change set the stage for Tyler Williams, who singled off Giovanny Gallegos and drove in Hayes and Jacob Morris for a three-run edge.

Charleston tagged Kannapolis reliever Matt Abramson for a run in the top of the sixth to cut the difference to 4-2. Dustin Fowler reached on a one-out single and advanced to second base during a wild pitch when Mike Ford was at the plate. Ford bounced into an error that allowed Fowler to come home.

The Intimidators answered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, stretching the lead to 7-2. RiverDogs reliever Evan Rutckyj inherited two runners in scoring position with one out and filled the bases with a walk. Trey Michalczewski grounded out to score Tyler Shryock. Hayes followed with a two-run double that brought in Hunter Jones and Rondon.

Another one-run spurt in the seventh was all that the RiverDogs could muster in the final frames. Gosuke Katoh singled before Kale Sumner and John Murphy drew walks that loaded the bases. Katoh scored when Tyler Wade grounded into a double play. Wade finished the game 0-for-5 and had his team-best 19-game on-base streak snapped.

McKenzie earned the win in his Intimidators debut, improving to 1-0 after five innings with one run allowed. Davis took the loss and is 3-8 following his 2.2 innings with four hits, four runs, four walks, and four strikeouts.

COMING UP: The finale of this four-game series is set for 7:05pm on Monday. Charleston LHP Chaz Hebert (0-1, 6.89 ERA) will face Kannapolis RHP James Dykstra (5-6, 3.04 ERA). Independence Day opens the homestand on an ISHPI Red Shirt Friday that will end with postgame fireworks. Tickets may be purchased at the Riley Park Box Office, (843) 577-DOGS (3647) or on-line at www.riverdogs.com.
