CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- The air is clearing at the College of Charleston as an anti-tobacco policy starts Tuesday. The tobacco-free campus policy was started as a student initiative a few years back and was officially adopted in October 2013.

The no smoking rules apply to all college-owned buildings in Downtown, Charleston plus sidewalks and outdoor space owned by the College. Public sidewalks and roads that run through some parts of the campus are not subject to the policy, though no-smoking is encourage in those areas by the College's student council.

Tobacco products included in the policy are cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco, snuff, and electronic cigarettes, among others. Reaction on campus is mixed to the new no-puff rules.

"I do think it is a good thing because of the air pollution, but I'm interested to see how the smokers take it," said College of Charleston student, Kola George."I know a lot of people do smoke and so I'm interested to see how it's going to go and how they are going to enforce it."

"I personally don't care if people smoke around me outside, but at the same time I think it is the school's right to be able to impose something like this," added CofC student, Daniel Warheit. "I think it will be better for the students themselves if they can take the opportunity of smoking away can give them a push to quit smoking."

CofC Tutor Carter Rhea said, "I'm really happy it's going tobacco-free. I think it will be good. Reduce the litter. Many people throw their cigarette butts on the ground. Also, it's not very fun walking around beautiful CofC in a wave of smoke."

The tobacco-free campus policy goes into effect July 1. The policy is designed to make the campus a healthier place.
