Haley: I'll provide road funding plan in January

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Gov. Nikki Haley says she'll provide a roadmap in January for funding highway and bridge work in South Carolina without raising taxes and without relying on the "money tree."

Haley said Tuesday she'll give legislators a plan that designates a revenue stream to road work. She offered no details, other than to say it doesn't involve the money tree. That's what she calls the difference between fall and spring revenue estimates.

Last January, she recommended the Legislature designate that growth to infrastructure, potentially generating $100 million yearly.

The Department of Transportation says it needs an additional $1.5 billion yearly over 20 years to bring roads to good conditions.

Republican Sen. Ray Cleary says if Haley has a plan, the public deserves to know it before the November election.
