An accident involving a pedestrian injured by a loose saw blade raises concerns over construction site safety, according to New York workplace accident lawyer Edgar Romano of Pasternack Tilker Ziegler Walsh Stanton & Romano L.L.P.

New York City, NY (PRWEB) July 03, 2014

Commenting on a news report about a construction accident that left a pedestrian injured by an out-of-control saw blade, New York workplace accident attorney Edgar Romano of Pasternack Tilker Ziegler Walsh Stanton & Romano L.L.P. said today contractors and construction workers alike are responsible for properly inspecting all equipment before use.

CBS New York detailed the accident on May 27 in an article called Woman Injured When Saw Blade Goes Flying In Hells Kitchen. According to the report, a three-foot saw blade came loose at a Hells Kitchen construction site, narrowly missing a number of pedestrians and sending a 43-year-old woman to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Fortunately, no fatalities were reported in this accident, Romano said. Whenever a saw blade comes loose, or any other piece of construction equipment is sent into the air at high speeds, workers and bystanders are at risk of suffering catastrophic and life-threatening injuries. Accidents like the one in Hells Kitchen serve as a reminder to all New York City contractors to properly inspect and maintain their equipment and for construction workers to make sure they take all necessary safety precautions before using heavy machinery.

The CBS New York report said the 3-foot-wide saw blade came loose while construction crews were cutting asphalt at Ninth Avenue and 48th Street. Witnesses told CBS the saw blade was sent 100 feet into the air, bouncing off a tree and narrowly missing a number of pedestrians before striking a 43-year-old woman in the leg.

According to CBS New York, construction crews had been working on this stretch of Ninth Avenue for two years. The sites contractor has been directed to stop using all saws until equipment is inspected and confirmed to be in proper working condition by the citys Department of Design and Construction, the article stated.

While the cause of this accident remains under investigation, its important for all construction companies to take necessary safety precautions to prevent accidents, Romano explained. This responsibility is shared by all contractors, foremen and laborers. No corners can be cut when it comes to ensuring the safety of your fellow coworkers and all bystanders near your workplace. This includes using well-maintained and safe equipment, properly training construction workers on machinery and following all rules and regulations governing work site safety.
