No bond set for the accused killer of Charleston teen

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- A bond court judge could not set bond for a murder suspect accused of killing a Charleston teen during a burglary.

The Bennett family stood together in front of a bond court judge and attempted to ask their son's accused killer why he did it.

“My son was the victim of his crime and I would just you know like to know why he had so much hatred in his heart, to murder my son," said Latrease Bennett, Brandon Bennett's mother.

Judge Linda Lombard could not ask the question to Terrell Smith, but she did not set bond for any of the charged Smith faces.

According to the affidavit, Smith entered the Bennett's Congress street residence through a window. Officers say Smith then went to the bedroom where Brandon Bennett was sleeping and stabbed him multiple times with a kitchen knife.

Darryl Bennett, the victim's father, witnessed the attack. The elder Bennett says he was also attacked by Smith.

“He's been to my house, I've shown him love. He's eaten my food, he's played games with my son and he does this cowardly act,” said Darryl Bennett.

Brandon Bennett was taken to Medical University Hospital where he later died. Darryl Bennett later identified Smith in a line up, and recognized Smith as a friend of his son.

Smith is charged with murder, attempted murder, first-degree burglary and possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a violent crime.

“Brandon showed him love and that's the part that we're finding hard because if he grew a friendship with him why would you just turn you back and murder someone so cold heartedly,” said Latrease Bennett.

She says the family is doing the best they can.

“Not very well, no one is doing very well because he took a lot from us, a lot,” said Latrease Bennett.

The Bennett family says one day they plan to ask a judge for Terrell Smith to stay in prison for the rest of his life.
