Sullivan's the 'best beach no one knows about,' says GQ

SULLIVAN'S ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) -- It seems the writers at GQ like to visit Charleston's beaches in the off-season.

Writer Mark Byrne recently listed Sullivan's Island as the "best beach no one knows about," saying it's rare to see more than 10 people laid out and definitely considers it superior to Folly Beach.

"Folly Beach, due south of Charleston, is a moth light for beach bros: It has big waves, rowdy bars, and overpriced grub. Clued-in locals know there's a better spot, even closer to the city, where you can go when you're not in the mood to share your towel space with a thousand strangers," he writes.

He advises picking up a two-dollar bag of boiled peanuts and pick a piece of land at the end of the tide and call it a day.

While Sullivan's doesn't see the foot traffic Folly does, it's still much busier than the sleepy little beach Byrne depicts. The road traffic along Ben Sawyer Boulevard and the hunt for parking off Middle Street is proof enough of that.
