Panel to discuss pay for interim Winthrop leader

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- A state commission is slated to consider increasing the salary of Winthrop University interim president Debra Boyd.

The school's provost took over last month when Winthrop trustees suspended, and later fired, Jamie Comstock Williamson, less than a year into her tenure as president.

Trustees said Williamson violated the public university's nepotism policy by hiring her husband for a part-time job, provided false information and was demeaning and rude. Williamson has denied all the complaints and threatened to sue.

Winthrop is on the agenda for Wednesday's meeting of the Agency Head Salary Commission.

Boyd has made $159,350 as provost and vice president for academic affairs.

Williamson was making almost $300,000 a year -- $169,970 from the state and $130,000 from the Winthrop University Foundation.
