ORANGEBURG, S.C. (WCIV) -- Deputies in Orangeburg County have identified the human remains found in a corn field in Holly Hill earlier this month.

According to investigators, the body was found off Farm Field Road on July 8 by a resident who was working in the field and smelled something decaying.

Deputies say the resident started looking for the source of the smell and found a shoe in a ditch and called for deputies. When deputies arrived, they found human remains behind a bush.

Orangeburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenell  announced the deceased as 26-year-old Adelso Corado Barrientos from North Charleston who had acquaintances in Orangeburg. The coroner's office has not released a cause of death.

“The hard work of our Forensic Investigators and all officers led us to identify Barrientos," said Ravenell. "They were in contact with several local, state and federal agencies to get us to this point in the investigation. This investigation is far from over as there is more to be learned about Barrientos death.”

Anyone that knew Adelso Corado Barrientos or his family is asked to contact Investigations at 803-534-3550 or Crime Stoppers at 888-CRIME-SC.
