Checking in on the Gaillard construction project

Posted: Updated:
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) --  If you have driven or walked past the Gaillard on George Street, you can't help but notice the building starting to take shape and come into it's own. Two years ago, the renovation project of the Gaillard Auditorium started. With a $142-million budget, it is the biggest project the City of Charleston has ever commissioned.

Doerte McManus, the Executive Director of the Gaillard Performance Hall Foundation, said the project is on target with its construction deadline and funding.

"It is inevitable that you find along the way some situations that you had not planned for, or could you, but we have a terrific team on board and I hope that Charleston is getting really excited for it," McManus said.

Blue tarp is starting to come down from the George Street facade of the renovated building, showcasing the detailed craftsmanship on the column work. The construction project has created at least 400 new jobs. Once the building is open, it is projected to created another 400 permanent jobs.

"I think we all need to realize how many hundreds of people work here to make this happen for us and to give Charleston a cornerstone and true jewel for its cultural life," McManus said. "It's an anchor to improve the overall quality of life and to give an unmatched quality for kids to perform, and to be something extraordinary for arts organizations to grow and businesses to grow and for all of us to have a jolly good time."

Construction on the Gaillard Center is set to be complete by early 2015 with an opening date to the public in Spring 2015.

The new Gaillard Center will feature a state-of-the-art performance hall, exhibition and event space, plus 11,000 square feet of green space, rooms for arts education, and municipal offices.
