Uber launches in 4 SC cities Thursday

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Getting a ride around four of South Carolina's busiest cities is about to get a little easier. Ridesharing service Uber launched Thursday in South Carolina.

The service launched at noon in Charleston, Greenville, Columbia, and Myrtle Beach and gives people the ability to catch a ride with the click of a button on smartphones and tablets.

Uber lets people looking for rides get details on their drivers, the cars driven, and track them on the app as they approach.

"Whether you want to soak up the sun on one of America’s best boardwalks, indulge in a King Street shopping spree, or dine out in downtown Columbia, let Uber be your ride," the company said in a release.

According to Uber, the costs will be less than most taxi rides in mid-range or hybrid vehicles that can seat up to four people. All of the drivers undergo a screening process, the company said in a release, and they accept not only credit cards but Paypal and Google Wallet payments.

As part of the launch in South Carolina, Uber is offering people their first five rides for free in the four cities through July 24.

Uber currently operates in nearly 150 cities in 40 countries.
