SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) -- A community gardening effort that strives to feed the Lowcountry's hungry is facing a hurdle. They need a fence to keep the deer from eating all of Katie's Krops.

According to a release from the non-profit, nearby development is encroaching on the deer population, driving them to forage for food in the Katie's Krops flagship garden.

"Since our first season in 2009, we have never seen damage to this extent," the release read. "We have tried every method possible to prevent the deer from eating our plants. Nothing has worked. In order to keep growing, we need to fence in the garden as soon as possible."

Because the garden is so large, the cost of the fence is expected to be expensive. To raise funds, Katie's Krops is holding a Swim-a-thon at the Pine Forest Country Club Pool.

The event will begin July 29 at 4 p.m. and all ages are welcome. You can participate as an individual or in relay teams. The swim-a-thon ends at 9 p.m. and prizes will be awarded to the top fundraisers.

Katie Stagliano started her community garden when she was in the third grade. Since then, Katie's program has gained national acclaim with more than 60 gardens in 25 states.

Over the past five years, Katie's Krops has grown over 7,760 pounds of healthy fresh food for the Lowcountry's hungry.
