New biz hub hopes to lure people northward on Charleston peninsula

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- There is the well-known neighborhood South of Broad and the restaurant S.N.O.B., but a new area -- SNOS -- is taking shape on the Charleston peninsula.

It stands for Slightly North of Spring Street and is an up-and-coming neighborhood that is set to become a local business hub for downtown Charleston.

A little off the beaten path, SNOS is an area of King Street that is blossoming into a strong neighborhood all of its own.

"All of these business really have a lot in common, they really have an artisan spirit, and incredible attention to detail," said local business owner Lisa Abernathy. "They really put their heart into what they do. It's really unique and they have a lot of flair."

Lisa Abernathy co-owns Blue Heron Acupuncture and Apothecary in the SNOS neighborhood. Abernathy has organized an open house event on Saturday called the "SNOS stroll" to bring attention to the group of small businesses there.

"The nickname SNOS is our location and playing off 'Slightly North of Broad.' There is a different character here; it's a little spunkier, a little edgier, but again it has that integrity and character of charleston as a whole," Abernathy said.

"I think people already know about this side of town or are starting to with Leon's and Butcher and Bee and the Recovery Room, and everyone knows about those places," said Enan Parezo, co-owner of local eatery Twenty-Six Divine. "So it helps our restaurant people coming up to see those restaurants and we dont have any PR firms behind us or a lot of money to advertise so we do what we can."

The SNOS stroll will take place Saturday, July 12 from 4-7 p.m. The event will feature food, live music, and open houses at a handful of local businesses in the neighborhood.

"It's a chance to open the arms of the neighborhood and say, 'Hey, if you haven't been here before I think you will like it,'" said Parezo.

Businesses taking part in the SNOS stroll include Twenty-Six Divine, Barsa, Butcher and Bee, Blue Heron Acupuncture and Apothecary, Charleston Cycles Compost, Coastal Climbing, High Wire Distilling Co., Holy City Barber, Recovery Room, and Tivoli.
