Arrest made in fatal North Charleston shooting

Posted: Updated:

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Less than 12 hours after a fatal shooting outside a convenience store, North Charleston police say they have a suspect in custody.

According to police, Tyrone Benn of North Charleston was charged with murder in the shooting death of 25-year-old Samuel Coardes.

Benn was found at a home on Osceola Street. A bond hearing is set for Sunday, but police do not have a motive for the shooting yet.

This was the second shooting of the day in North Charleston.

According to Charleston County Dispatch, officers were sent to the 2700 block of Spruill Avenue for a reported shooting. Police said the shooting happened at the Circle A Convenience Store.

The store's surveillance cameras recorded the altercation between the two men.

The video shows the two black men talking for several minutes outside the store. One man leaves the store, and two ladies enter right after him, that’s when cameras show a black man with dreadlocks wearing a black T-shirt and shorts pull out a gun and shoot the victim while he is looking the other way.

The store's manager said he had no idea what was happening outside the store.

“I was in the back of the store and I heard a shot and I immediately thought to dial 911,” said Ryan Abbadi. "Everyone in the store started screaming and crying. We don’t what or why anything had happened. It was crazy.”

Police say officers were called to the store around 10 a.m. Saturday and found a black man lying on the ground suffering from several gunshot wounds. He died at the scene, police said.

“I saw him lying there with blood coming out of his head,” said Abbadi. “I’ve been scared and my employees working in the store have been scared, too.”

Witnesses told police the suspect ran, but did not give them details on where the suspect went or what he looked like.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 554-1111.
