NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Family members of a man killed in a shooting outside a convenience store Saturday said the man accused of pulling the trigger had been a friend, but now deserves to stay in jail.

Lakriesha Douglas never got a chance to spend time with her cousin after he was released from jail earlier this month.

“When I called my cousin to tell him that I was coming to see him I should've gone. I never went,” said Douglas.

Douglas admits her cousin, Samuel Coardes, had his problems with the law, but that he had made a promise to his daughter to stay out of trouble.

"My cousin came home to change his life around to be with his daughter,” Douglas said.

The 25-year-old never got to keep that promise. Police say Coardes was killed in a shooting Saturday morning in front the Circle A convenience store on Spruill Avenue.

The suspect was a very familiar face to the family -- 27-year-old Tyrone Benn.

"I’m trying to figure why? Why did it happen? Everyone grew up in the same neighborhood; everyone went to the same school; everybody knows everybody,” said Diamond Burton, Coardes’ cousin.

Their friendship made it even harder for the family to look Benn in the face as the judge told him bond would not be set Sunday morning.

Benn was charged with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.

“He deserve it from what he did to my cousin,” said Douglas. “He don’t need to be out here in these streets at all."

The family hopes Benn being in jail will bring answers of why he allegedly killed a friend.
