Survey: Gas prices drop, will remain lower with proper conditions

Posted: Updated:
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) – There's good news for vacation-goers who are deciding to drive to their destinations. Gas prices are going down both in the Palmetto State and across the U.S.

According to GasBuddy.com, the average gallon of gas in South Carolina has fallen 3.1 cents per gallon to just $3.32 per gallon. The national average has fallen 3.7 cents per gallon.

“The last two weeks have seen some large drops in oil prices and gasoline spot prices -- a very exciting thing to see in the middle of summer driving season,” said GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHann.

GasBuddy predicts that over the next week, the national average will fall back under $3.50 per gallon. The company said the decline is a drop consumers haven't seen since April. Gas Buddy analysts also said prices will also drop under last year's average in the next few days.

DeHann suggests consumers might be in the clear for now, as long as the upcoming storm season doesn’t get too bad. He also had advice on how to better take advantage of the lower prices.

"I'd caution motorists as we expect these large decreases to only buy the amount of gasoline they immediately need as prices drop, and to shop around as price gaps between stations widen because of the quick decrease in wholesale gas price," he said. "Some stations will be buying the cheaper gasoline and passing on savings faster, leading to a wide array of gas prices."
