RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - The Associated Press and the Radio Television Digital News Association of the Carolinas (RTDNAC) have teamed up for a joint awards contest in 2014.

The contest recognizes the best of TV, radio and website work in North Carolina and South Carolina.

RTDNAC continues to recognize the work of professionals and students in the Carolinas, while the AP will offer awards separately for South Carolina and North Carolina in each radio and TV division in three major news categories, including best newscast and most outstanding news operation.

"The AP welcomes the opportunity to partner with the RTDNAC on a strong program and awards event to honor the best journalism work of North Carolina and South Carolina radio and TV stations," Maryann Mrowca, AP assistant bureau chief for the Carolinas, said Monday. "The joint effort strengthens the work of both organizations in encouraging accurate, enlightening and engaging reporting necessary for an informed public."

RTDNAC Board of Directors President Scott Saxton agreed.

"This year's contest is bigger than ever with the addition of the power of The Associated Press," Saxton said. "We're excited to join forces with AP on celebrating the work of journalists across the Carolinas."

A new public service award will recognize outstanding enterprise reporting on a significant social problem or issue.
