NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- With nearly a dozen murders and 32 shootings in the first seven months of 2014, North Charleston Police Chief Eddie Driggers has a message to the city's residents: end the violence by giving police information.

Driggers talked Tuesday about the role the community has to play to keep their neighborhoods safe.

“This is a group effort: if you see something say something,” said Driggers. “We expect that of them and the community should expect that of themselves to step up and take a stand against what is wrong.”

Driggers said working with the community is what helped police solve four shootings that happened in the last few weeks.

“These crimes that we have been having -- especially the murders -- are people who know each other,” said Driggers.

Tyrone Benn was arrested for the murder of Samuel Coardes. Coardes was shot in the back of head Saturday morning. The family said Coardes and Benn knew each other.

The weekend before, police say 22-year-old Miquel Shine was shot to death on Alton Street during a fight over sunglasses.

“Every family that has had somebody killed, I told them we were going to do everything we can to bring people to justice and we have done just that,” said Driggers.

The chief says he can’t stop all the violence but he does make this simple promise: “The NorthCharlestonn Police Department is never going to give up charging people with crime."

The spokesperson for the department said the number of murders this year so far is the same as the number from last year.
