Deputies: Babysitter arrested for hugging toddler to death

Posted: Updated:
ORANGEBURG, S.C. (WCIV) – Orangeburg County Sheriff's deputies arrested a man after a 14-month-old boy in his care was found dead.

According to OCSO officials, deputies responded to a home on Maxwell Place June 27 for reports of an "unresponsive child."

Investigators said the suspect was watching the child, placed the baby in his crib for a nap, and later found the child dead of asphyxiation.

Deputies said the suspect, identified as 26-year-old Robert Christian Kemp, was a friend of the family. He was arrested July 15 and charged with involuntary manslaughter.

According to a OCSO report, Kemp gave the child "a bear hug, squeezing the victim so tight that the victim stopped breathing as a result causing the toddler’s death."

According to the chief deputy coroner in an interview with WBTW, the child died in 2013 shortly after the incident. The charges were filed this week, however.

Kemp's bond was set at $10,000 Wednesday.
