Man gets 8 years in Orangeburg shooting death

Posted: Updated:

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) - A man initially charged with murder in an Orangeburg County shooting death has taken a plea deal and will spend eight years in prison.

The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg reports ( ) that 33-year-old Uzomah Colter pleaded guilty Tuesday to voluntary manslaughter. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison, but that sentence will be suspended to eight years behind bars as long as he completes five years of probation.

Colter was supposed to stand trial on a murder charge this week, but discrepancies in witness testimony in a pretrial hearing led prosecutors to accept the plea deal to the lesser charge.

Colter was accused of shooting 36-year-old Larry Rucker Jr. during an April 2011 confrontation. Prosecutors say it appears the men were angry at each other over a woman.
