Communities across SC mark National Night Out

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP/WCIV) - Hundreds of people in communities across South Carolina are observing National Night Out with a variety of events.

What began in 1984 as people leaving their porch lights on as way to join together to stand against crime has now evolved into events ranging from rallies and neighborhood cookouts to youth events and law enforcement demonstrations.

According to the National Night Out website, at least 60 communities statewide are holding events on Tuesday.

Nationwide, there are events in 16,000 communities, involving an estimated 38 million people.

Various locations in the Charleston area will be holding events starting at Bridgeview Apartments and going all the way into Daniel Island. Click here for a full list.

In North Charleston, an event will be held in Park Circle featuring free food and games. Click here for more information.

The NAACP Summerville branch is also having an event in Doty Field Park. Click here for information.
