Posted: Updated:

BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say thousands of gallons of untreated sewage have leaked into marshes near Beaufort.

The Beaufort Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/X1fQxpbes ) the Beaufort-Jasper Water & Sewer Authority announced Tuesday that at least 5,000 gallons of sewage has leaked into Battery Creek.

It's not known how long the sewage has been leaking.

People are being warned not to get into the water along a section of Battery Creek in Port Royal and Beaufort.

Officials say that a contractor has been brought in to make repairs to the aging pipe where the leak occurred.
