SC agencies launching Sober or Slammer campaign

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The South Carolina Highway Patrol is joining with other law enforcement agencies and hospitals to make the final days of the summer driving season safer on the state's highways.

The Sober or Slammer campaign kicks off on Friday and continues through Labor Day.

The Department of Public Safety says that the campaign will include stepped up law enforcement and public education to combat drunken driving.

A release from the department says 141 people have died on the state's highways since Memorial Day. That's down from the 168 who died last year during the same period.

But Department of Public Safety Director Leroy Smith says that, while fatalities are down, drunken driving is still a problem. Impaired driving was involved in 40 percent of the fatalities in the state this summer.
