2 killed in helicopter crash in Tuscaloosa County (update)

Update 7:46 p.m.

Authorities in Tuscaloosa have identified the two people killed in a helicopter crash late Tuesday morning.

According to a release, 51-year-old pilot Matthew Wallace and 63-year-old David Carson, an Alabama Power employee, were killed when the chopper they were in crashed off of Blue Creek Road in northeastern Tuscaloosa County.

The helicopter was was owned by Hiram, Georgia-based contractor Rotorworks, LLC. Carson was on board the McDonnell Douglas 369e aircraft to observe transmission power lines in the area.

A team of investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board is expected to arrive Wednesday morning to begin its probe into the cause of the accident.

Statement from Alabama Power regarding the death of David Carson:

"The Alabama Power family is saddened by the death of David Carson, 63, an employee in the Western Division office. David was killed Tuesday morning when the helicopter he was a passenger in crashed in a remote area of Tuscaloosa County. David and the pilot of the helicopter were conducting an aerial inspection of a transmission line. The helicopter was owned and operated by a private contractor, RotorWorks, LLC out of Hiram, Georgia.

"David was a Senior Line Specialist and had 44 years of service at Alabama Power. Our thoughts and prayers go out to David's family during this difficult time."

Update 3:20 p.m.

One of the two people killed in a helicopter crash in Tuscaloosa County was an Alabama Power employee, a company spokesperson confirmed to ABC 33/40.

The pilot and utility worker were observing transmission power lines when it crashed shortly after 10 a.m., killing both people on board. The chopper was owned and operated by Rotorworks, LLC out of Hiram, Georgia.
Authorities haven't released the names of the victims as an investigation remains ongoing.

ABC 33/40 has confirmed that 2 people are dead after a helicopter crash in Tuscaloosa County. We have a crew on the way and will have more information as it becomes available.

Update:

The FAA is investigating the crash of a McDonnell Douglas 369E helicopter. The crash happened about 20 miles northeast of Tuscaloosa just after 10am Tuesday. The NTSB will determine probable cause.
